Speed Cleaning Before Guests Arrive
The 30–60 minute speed clean before guests arrive is one of the most common real-world cleaning scenarios. With limited time, the priority is creating the impression of a clean, welcoming home — which is not the same task as actually deep cleaning. Here's the optimised approach.
First 15 Minutes: Visible Surfaces
- Entryway: Shoes put away, coats hung, floor swept — the first impression is formed in the first 10 seconds
- Living room: Surfaces cleared and wiped, cushions straightened, anything out of place put away — do not start cleaning under things, just clear the visible space
- Kitchen countertops: Clear and wipe — this takes 5 minutes with a damp cloth and makes the kitchen look dramatically better
Next 15 Minutes: Guest Bathroom
The guest bathroom gets full attention: toilet wipe-down (exterior, rim, bowl quick scrub), sink wipe, counter clear, mirror wipe, fresh hand towel out. This is the room guests will actually use, and it needs to look genuinely clean, not just tidy.
Remaining Time: Floors and Smells
A quick vacuum of the main living area and entryway takes 5–8 minutes and dramatically improves the appearance of the whole floor level. For smell: open windows briefly to air the space, remove any garbage that might be contributing odour, avoid using air freshener sprays (they often make the underlying smell worse) — a candle lit 15 minutes before guests arrive is the most effective finishing move.
