Cleaning Stainless Steel Appliances
Stainless steel has become the dominant appliance finish in Ontario kitchens — refrigerators, dishwashers, ranges, and microwaves in millions of homes from luxury Rosedale kitchens to standard GTA condo builds. It looks sharp when clean, but stainless steel is notoriously susceptible to fingerprints, streaks, and the kind of cleaning mistakes that leave the surface looking worse than before you started.
The Grain Rule
Stainless steel has a grain — a directional pattern of fine lines in the metal surface. The most important rule in cleaning stainless: always wipe with the grain, never against it or in circular motions. Wiping against the grain pushes debris into the grooves and causes micro-scratching that becomes permanent dulling over time.
- Look closely at the surface — the grain usually runs horizontally on refrigerators and vertically on dishwashers and range panels
- Use a clean, lint-free microfibre cloth
- Wipe in one direction, following the grain
What Works for Fingerprints and Streaks
- Plain water and microfibre: For fresh fingerprints and light cleaning, a barely-damp microfibre cloth followed immediately by a dry cloth to eliminate moisture is effective and leaves no residue
- Dish soap and water: A small amount of dish soap in warm water on a microfibre cloth, wiped with the grain, then dried — effective for light grease
- Bar Keepers Friend (powder or spray): The professional standard for stubborn staining, mineral deposits, or rust spots. Apply with the grain, rinse, dry immediately
- Avoid: Steel wool, abrasive pads, bleach-based cleaners, and any product not specifically designed for stainless steel
