The Top-Down Principle
Always clean from top to bottom in a multi-storey home. This means starting on the upper level and working downward, and within each level, starting at the ceiling (dusting ceiling fans, light fixtures) and working down to the floors. Anything that falls from upper surfaces — dust, debris, dislodged particles — falls onto surfaces you haven't cleaned yet, rather than onto freshly cleaned floors.
The Two-Level Sequence
- Second floor: all bedrooms and bathrooms. Start with dusting surfaces, then bathroom cleaning (toilet, tub/shower, sink, mirror), then floor vacuuming throughout the upper level in a continuous circuit
- Main floor: kitchen, living areas, bathrooms. Kitchen first (most intensive work), then living room, dining room, powder room — surfaces, then floor in a continuous circuit
- Basement if applicable: Last, since basement floors are often the dustiest and you don't want to track basement dust upstairs
- Stairs: Vacuum stairs after completing both levels — you'll have walked them repeatedly and they'll have accumulated debris from cleaning
