Cleaning Upholstered Furniture & Sofas
Upholstered furniture is one of the most used and least cleaned surfaces in most Ontario homes. Sofas, fabric armchairs, and upholstered dining chairs accumulate skin oils, food particles, pet hair, dust mites, and general grime at a rate that makes periodic deep cleaning worthwhile for both aesthetics and allergen control.
Reading the Care Tag
Upholstered furniture has a care tag (usually under the cushion or on the underside of the seat) with a cleaning code:
- W: Water-based cleaners only — safest option for most people
- S: Solvent-based dry cleaners only — do not use water
- WS: Either water or solvent-based cleaners
- X: Vacuum only — no liquid cleaning agents at all
Routine Maintenance
Vacuum upholstered furniture weekly (or with every regular clean) using the upholstery attachment — cushions removed and vacuumed on both sides, crevices and arm areas addressed. This alone removes the majority of accumulating debris and prevents it from working deeper into the fabric.
Spot Cleaning (W or WS fabric)
For fresh stains: blot (never rub) with a clean cloth to absorb as much as possible. Apply a small amount of upholstery cleaner to a cloth (not directly to the fabric), blot from the outside of the stain inward. Allow to dry fully — applying too much moisture risks water staining and mould in the cushion foam.
Professional Upholstery Cleaning
Annual professional upholstery cleaning for a well-used Ontario family sofa costs $80–$180 for the sofa alone and is worthwhile every 12–18 months for households with children or pets. Hot water extraction (steam cleaning) by a certified upholstery cleaner is the most thorough method for fabric sofas rated W or WS.
