Opening Your Ontario Vacation Home for Spring
Spring opening of an Ontario cottage or vacation home is one of the most anticipated and most work-intensive seasonal events for property owners across Muskoka, Kawartha, Haliburton, Georgian Bay, Prince Edward County, and the Kawarthas. A systematic opening sequence ensures you arrive at a livable property rather than spending the first weekend dealing with cleaning and repairs.
Pre-Cleaning Inspection First
Before cleaning anything, walk the property with fresh eyes and document what needs attention — this is your inspection phase, not your cleaning phase. Look for: mouse evidence (droppings in closets, kitchen, basement), moisture intrusion (water stains on ceiling, condensation damage), any structural or mechanical concerns (plumbing leaks, appliance failures, pest damage). Address any significant issues before starting cleaning.
Opening Cleaning Sequence
- Air the property: Open all windows and doors and run fans — seasonal properties accumulate musty air from months of being sealed, and airing out before cleaning makes the cleaning more effective
- Top to bottom: Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, and high shelves before cleaning surfaces and floors
- Kitchen: Check for any stored items that didn't survive winter (some foods don't store well in unheated cottages), wipe all surfaces, run the dishwasher empty on hot, clean the refrigerator interior before restocking
- Bathrooms: Run water through all fixtures for 2 minutes before first use, especially if the pipes were drained for winter
- Floors: Vacuum and mop all floors thoroughly — winter mouse activity leaves debris that should be cleaned up before occupancy
