Delicate Textiles in Ontario Home Cleaning
Premium Ontario homes — particularly in Forest Hill, Lawrence Park, Rosedale, and comparable markets — have wool rugs, cashmere throws, and delicate fabric items that require care around cleaning visits. Here's how professional cleaning approaches these items.
Wool Rugs
- Standard cleaning visit: Vacuuming is the standard care for wool rugs during a cleaning visit. Use a vacuum with a brush roll that can be turned off (brush rolls can pull wool fibres) or a suction-only setting
- Spills: Blot immediately with a clean white cloth — never rub. For wool rugs, professional spot cleaning products designed for wool are preferred; standard carpet cleaners can strip the lanolin that gives wool its resilience
- Professional rug cleaning: Wool rugs should be professionally cleaned (sent out to a rug cleaning specialist) every 1–3 years, not cleaned in place with steam or wet extraction methods
Cashmere and Fine Textile Items
Cashmere throws, silk cushion covers, and other fine textiles in the home should be identified to the cleaning team at the start of a service relationship. A professional cleaner should not be asked to launder fine textiles — dry-clean only items are outside the scope of professional house cleaning. The cleaning team's job is to work around these items (dust under them, replace them in position) without handling them unsafely.
