Post-Construction Cleaning Checklist — Ontario
Post-construction cleaning in Ontario — after a renovation, a new build, or a major addition — requires a systematic approach that addresses specific construction debris that standard cleaning doesn't. Here's a complete checklist.
Phase 1: Rough-In (During Construction)
If the construction team is doing regular cleanouts, this is handled by the contractor. If you're booking post-construction cleaning after the trades are done, this phase is covered in the final clean.
Phase 2: Pre-Final Clean (Trades Done, Fixtures Not Installed)
- Remove all construction debris — drywall scraps, fasteners, protective coverings
- Vacuum all drywall dust from surfaces, ledges, and inside cabinets (construction drywall dust is pervasive — it settles in every horizontal surface)
- Wipe all surfaces with a damp cloth to remove fine drywall dust that vacuuming misses
Phase 3: Final Clean (Fixtures Installed, Pre-Occupancy)
- Windows: Remove construction stickers and protective film from window glass and frames
- Cabinets and millwork: Remove all protective film and coverings from cabinet faces, countertops, and millwork. Wipe down all surfaces
- Floors: Remove protective floor coverings. Sweep, vacuum, then damp mop according to floor type
- Bathrooms: Clean plumbing fixtures, toilet, vanity, and shower/tub. Remove all protective coverings from fixtures
- HVAC vents: Remove construction covers and clean vent faces
What Professional Post-Construction Cleaning Adds
Professional post-construction cleaning teams bring HEPA vacuums (which capture fine drywall and construction dust that standard vacuums recirculate), and the systematic approach to surface cleaning that ensures everything is addressed in the right order. All prices include Ontario HST (13%).
