Background Checks & Bonding in Ontario Cleaning
Letting someone into your home requires trust. Professional cleaning companies in Ontario verify their staff through background checks and often carry surety bonding — but not all companies are equal about this. Here's what these terms mean and what to ask before you hire.
Criminal Background Checks
A criminal record check (CRC) flags convictions for theft, fraud, assault, and other offences. For a home cleaning role, the relevant offences are property crimes. In Ontario, a basic criminal record check can be done through the police or through third-party providers like Sterling Backcheck.
- What to ask: "Do you run criminal background checks on all cleaners?" and "How recent?"
- Red flag: "We trust our cleaners" without any mention of a formal check process
Bonding
A surety bond (also called a fidelity bond) provides financial compensation if an employee steals from a client. It doesn't prevent theft — it provides recourse after the fact. Not all cleaning companies are bonded; larger, more established companies typically are.
Maidless Screening
All Maidless cleaners pass a criminal background check before their first assignment. Every cleaner is WSIB-covered and the company carries full general liability insurance. Documentation is available on request before your first booking.
