Basement Dehumidifier and Moisture Control
Ontario basements are humidity management challenges — the combination of below-grade construction, concrete or block foundation walls, and Ontario's humid summers means that most finished and unfinished Ontario basements require active moisture control to prevent mould growth, musty odours, and the structural and health problems that follow. The dehumidifier is the primary tool for that control, and like all appliances, it requires regular cleaning to function effectively.
Cleaning the Dehumidifier
Water bucket: Empty daily or on the dehumidifier's automatic shutoff cycle. Wash the bucket weekly with warm water and a few drops of dish soap — biofilm and mould can grow in standing water in the reservoir.
Air filter: The dehumidifier's air filter traps dust — a clogged filter restricts airflow and reduces efficiency. Remove and rinse monthly under running water; allow to dry completely before reinstalling.
Coils: The evaporator coils can accumulate dust and mould — wipe with a damp cloth or use a coil-cleaning spray (available at hardware stores) annually, following the manufacturer's instructions.
Dehumidifier Settings for Ontario Basements
Target relative humidity: 45–55% in summer, 30–45% in winter (lower in winter to prevent condensation on cold surfaces). In Ontario's July-August humid period, dehumidifiers in finished basements often run continuously. An undersized unit for the basement's volume will struggle — ensure your unit is sized appropriately (capacity is measured in litres per day).
Mould Prevention
A properly maintained dehumidifier, combined with adequate basement ventilation, is the foundation of Ontario basement mould prevention. If musty odour persists despite controlled humidity, investigate for hidden moisture sources: slow plumbing leaks, foundation cracks allowing groundwater infiltration, or HVAC condensation issues.
