Cleaning Before a Dinner Party
Hosting a dinner party in your Ontario home doesn't require a full deep clean — it requires a focused, strategic clean of the areas your guests will actually see and use. The 2-hour pre-party cleaning checklist covers the high-impact areas without the stress of a full-house clean.
The Priority Areas
Bathrooms (highest priority): Guests notice the bathroom more than almost any other space. Clean the toilet (inside and outside), wipe down the sink and counter, clean the mirror, and replace or refold hand towels. Fresh hand soap. A 15-minute bathroom focus makes the biggest impression.
Entryway: First impression — sweep or vacuum, clear any clutter, clean the front door interior. If guests will hang coats, clear and wipe down the area.
Living and dining areas: Vacuum or sweep floors, wipe the dining table (where guests will be), dust obvious surfaces (coffee table, mantle), plump and arrange cushions.
Kitchen: Counters clear and wiped, sink clean (if guests can see it from the table or will use it), stovetop clean before cooking. Don't clean the kitchen while cooking — focus on it before you start.
What to Deprioritize
Bedrooms (unless guests will see them), basement, inside closets — guests won't notice. Spend your time on the spaces they'll occupy.
The Evening Before
The most relaxed pre-party cleaning is done the night before: bathrooms, floors, surfaces. Leave only quick-wipe tasks for the day of. This avoids cleaning while stressed and gives you time to cook and get ready without a mop in hand.
