Condo Move-In Cleaning Inspection Checklist
When moving into a new condo unit in Ontario — whether as a renter or a new owner — a systematic cleaning inspection before unpacking ensures that the unit is in acceptable condition and documents its state at move-in. Here's what to check.
Kitchen Checklist
- Oven interior: check for baked-on grease or residue — a common area that previous occupants leave in poor condition
- Range hood filter: check and replace if heavily grease-laden
- Refrigerator interior: check all drawers and shelves for residue; wipe before loading
- Dishwasher: check filter basket for debris; run an empty hot cycle with a cleaning tablet
- Cabinet interiors: wipe all shelves before storing food or dishes
Bathroom Checklist
- Grout lines: check for mould — pink, grey, or black discolouration
- Toilet base and behind toilet: often missed in standard cleans
- Exhaust fan: remove cover and check for dust accumulation
- Showerhead: check for hard water mineral deposits (soak in white vinegar if needed)
General Areas
- Window tracks: accumulate debris and are rarely cleaned thoroughly
- Light switch plates: check for grime and fingerprint accumulation
- Closet floors and shelving: often skipped in move-out cleans
- Balcony or terrace: check for bird activity, debris from previous occupant
Document Everything
Photograph the condition of the unit at move-in — timestamped photos protect you at move-out. Any pre-existing damage or cleaning issues should be noted in writing to the landlord or property manager within 24 hours of occupancy.
