Decluttering Before Your Professional Clean
One of the most common reasons a professional cleaning doesn't meet expectations is clutter — surfaces covered with personal items, mail piles, dishes, children's toys, and general household accumulation that prevents the cleaner from reaching the surfaces they're there to clean. Here's how to think about preparing your home.
Why Clutter Affects Cleaning Quality
A professional cleaner's job is to clean surfaces — countertops, shelves, floors, and tables. When those surfaces are covered with items, the cleaner has two choices: move items individually and replace them (slow, risks breaking or misplacing things) or clean around them (faster but leaves a large area untouched). Neither is ideal. The cleanest result comes from surfaces that are cleared and ready to clean.
What Decluttering Means (and Doesn't Mean)
- What it means: Clear countertops of daily-use items (mail, phone chargers, coffee mugs, kids' school papers), pick toys off the floor in children's rooms, put away laundry from bedroom floors
- What it doesn't mean: Deep organizing. You don't need to sort anything, tidy storage, or address the inside of cabinets. Visible surface decluttering is all that matters for cleaning quality
The 15-Minute Pre-Clean Routine
Most Ontario households can clear their home for a professional clean in 15–20 minutes if they know the routine: kitchen counter clear, bathroom counter clear, bedroom floors clear, and living area surfaces cleared. This one investment of time dramatically improves the quality of the clean that follows.
