Dishwasher Cleaning and Maintenance
Ontario's hard water creates specific dishwasher maintenance challenges. Calcium and mineral deposits build up inside the dishwasher tank, on the spray arms, and in the filter in ways that accumulate quietly until performance drops noticeably. Regular cleaning — monthly for most Ontario households — prevents the buildup that leads to cloudy glassware, poor washing performance, and eventually appliance failure.
The Filter
Modern dishwashers have a filter in the bottom of the tub — either a manual filter (cylindrical, usually under the spray arm) or a self-cleaning filter. Manual filters need to be removed and rinsed monthly in most Ontario households. The signs of a dirty filter: standing water at the bottom of the tub after a cycle, or food particles remaining on dishes after a full cycle.
- Twist and remove the filter (consult your dishwasher manual — it varies by brand)
- Rinse under warm water, using a soft brush to remove trapped food debris
- Replace and lock back in place
Spray Arms
The spray arms have small holes that distribute water during the wash cycle. In Ontario hard-water homes, these holes can calcify partially blocked — reducing spray pressure and leaving dishes unwashed. Remove the spray arms (they typically unscrew or unclip), soak in white vinegar for 30 minutes, clear any blocked holes with a toothpick, and reinstall.
Monthly Deep Clean Cycle
Once a month: run an empty dishwasher on the hottest cycle with a commercial dishwasher cleaner (Affresh, Finish Dishwasher Cleaner) or a cup of white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe container on the top rack. This dissolves mineral buildup in the tank and spray system.
