Deep Cleaning Your Home Office
The home office has become a primary workspace for a large share of Ontario's professional workforce, and it generates its own specific cleaning needs. The combination of electronics, paper, cables, and extended daily use creates a distinctive cleaning challenge that's different from both standard room cleaning and commercial office cleaning.
Desk Surface
Clear the desk completely — remove all items, cables, and accessories. Wipe the desk surface with a slightly damp microfibre cloth followed by a dry buff. For wooden desks: use a wood-safe cleaner; for glass or laminate: a glass cleaner on a microfibre cloth. Pay attention to the area under the monitor and around cable routing where dust accumulates most heavily.
Electronics
- Monitor screen: Dry microfibre only — never spray liquid directly on a screen. A monitor cleaning kit (dry microfibre + screen-safe solution on the cloth) removes fingerprints without damage
- Keyboard: Turn upside down and shake — the quantity of debris that falls out of a regularly used keyboard is always surprising. Use compressed air (available at any office supply store) to blow between keys, then wipe key surfaces with an isopropyl alcohol wipe (70% IPA is safe for key surfaces)
- Mouse: Wipe all surfaces with an IPA wipe; the mouse scroll wheel and button crevices accumulate significant grime
Cable Management
Cables behind a desk accumulate significant dust and create cleaning obstacles. An annual cable management session — tying and routing cables off the floor, labeling them — makes future cleaning dramatically easier. Dusting cable bundles with a compressed air blast removes the dust that otherwise accumulates in cable tangles.
