Cleaning During and After Home Renovation
Major home renovation in Ontario — a kitchen remodel, bathroom renovation, basement finishing, or addition — generates cleaning challenges at every phase. Approaching cleaning systematically during and after construction prevents the post-renovation overwhelming mess and protects the rest of the home from dust and debris migration.
Containing Dust During Renovation
The single most effective thing homeowners can do during renovation is temporary containment. Seal the renovation area from the rest of the home with temporary plastic sheeting and tape at the doorways — this dramatically reduces the amount of drywall dust and fine construction debris that enters the living areas. It's imperfect but effective: a sealed plastic barrier keeps roughly 70–80% of dust in the work zone. Also seal HVAC vents in the work zone to prevent construction dust from entering the duct system.
During-Renovation Cleaning
At the end of each work week, do a basic rough clean of the renovation area — remove large debris, sweep, remove packaging materials. This keeps the work zone more organized for the trades and prevents debris from becoming embedded in subfloor or rough surfaces that are harder to address later.
Post-Renovation Deep Clean
The post-renovation deep clean is a professional service that addresses the construction residue that remains after all trades have finished. It differs from standard cleaning in scope and time — expect 6–12 hours for a complete kitchen or major bathroom renovation cleanup. Key tasks: drywall dust from all surfaces including inside HVAC vents, adhesive and paint residue removal, sticker removal from new fixtures, final floor clean. Ontario HST (13%) applies.
