Cleaning Ceiling Fans Without the Dust Mess
Ceiling fan blades accumulate dust faster than almost any other surface in an Ontario home — and when disturbed, that dust distributes through the room instead of landing in one place. The right method captures the dust rather than spreading it.
The Pillowcase Method
The best tool for cleaning ceiling fan blades is a pillowcase you don't mind getting dusty:
- Slip the open end of the pillowcase over one blade entirely, encasing it
- Press the fabric against the top and bottom of the blade
- Slide the pillowcase off the blade — the dust comes with it, contained inside the case
- Repeat for each blade
- Take the pillowcase outside and shake it out, or drop it directly in the laundry
This method captures dust that would otherwise fall onto the floor, furniture, and bedding below — particularly important in bedrooms.
Cleaning the Motor Housing and Light Fixtures
After the blades, wipe the motor housing and any attached light fixtures with a damp microfibre cloth. Glass light shades can be removed and washed in warm soapy water.
How Often
Monthly ceiling fan cleaning is sufficient for most Ontario homes. Homes with pets or high dust levels (near a busy road, older construction) may benefit from every-two-weeks. Most professional cleaning services — including Maidless — include ceiling fan blades in their standard service scope.
