Cleaning Your Kitchen Exhaust Hood
The kitchen exhaust hood and its filters are among the most neglected surfaces in Ontario homes — and the most important to maintain. Grease accumulation in range hoods is a genuine fire hazard: the National Fire Protection Association identifies cooking equipment as the leading cause of home fires in Canada, with grease buildup a primary contributing factor.
How Often to Clean
- Filters: Every 4–6 weeks if you cook frequently; every 2–3 months for lighter use
- Hood exterior and interior surfaces: Monthly wipe-down; deeper clean every 3 months
- Full degreasing: Every 6 months minimum
Filter Cleaning Method
- Remove the filter (usually slides or clips out — check your model's manual)
- Fill your sink with very hot water and add a generous amount of dish soap plus 2–3 tablespoons of baking soda
- Submerge the filter and let it soak for 15–20 minutes
- Scrub with a non-scratch brush — the grease should release with minimal effort after soaking
- Rinse thoroughly, shake off excess water, and let air-dry completely before reinstalling
Hood Surface Degreasing
Commercial degreasers (available at Canadian Tire, Home Depot, or any Ontario grocery store) work better than all-purpose cleaners for the hood exterior and interior. Spray, let dwell for 2–3 minutes, wipe with a microfibre cloth. For heavy buildup, repeat. The underside of the hood nearest the burners accumulates the most grease — give it extra attention. Wipe dry to prevent streaking on stainless steel.
When to Call for Help
If grease buildup is extensive or the hood fan is making unusual noises, a professional deep clean (or appliance service) is worthwhile. Maidless includes range hood exterior cleaning in all standard Ontario service visits.
