Cleaning the Inside of Your Dishwasher
The dishwasher is one of the most overlooked appliances in Ontario home cleaning — most homeowners assume that a machine that runs hot water and detergent continuously cleans itself. It doesn't. The filter, spray arms, door gasket, and interior surfaces accumulate food particles, grease, and mineral deposits from Ontario's municipal water supply that affect both cleaning performance and odour.
The Filter (Monthly)
Most modern dishwashers have a removable filter at the bottom of the tub — it traps food particles that would otherwise recirculate. Remove the filter (typically a quarter-turn and lift), rinse under running water, and scrub with a soft brush and dish soap. A clogged filter is the most common cause of poor dishwasher performance and standing water odour.
Spray Arms
The rotating spray arms have small holes that jet water — these holes clog with food and mineral deposits over time. Remove the spray arms (most unscrew or unclip), rinse, and use a toothpick to clear any clogged holes. Reattach and confirm they spin freely.
Door Gasket
The rubber seal around the door accumulates mold and mildew. Wipe thoroughly with a damp cloth — get into the folds of the gasket. For mold: a diluted white vinegar solution is effective and won't degrade the rubber.
Monthly Deep Clean
Place a dishwasher-safe bowl filled with white vinegar on the top rack and run a hot cycle — the vinegar descales and deodorizes the interior. Follow with a short cycle after sprinkling baking soda on the bottom of the tub to further neutralize odours. Do not mix vinegar and baking soda in the same cycle.
