Cleaning Your Microwave Thoroughly
The microwave is one of the most-used kitchen appliances in Ontario homes and one of the most neglected when it comes to interior cleaning. Splattered food baked onto the interior ceiling, sides, and turntable plate by repeated heating cycles creates accumulation that goes well beyond what a quick wipe addresses.
The Steam Method (Most Effective)
Fill a microwave-safe bowl with 1 cup of water and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar (or a few slices of lemon). Microwave on high for 5 minutes — the steam loosens all baked-on food residue. Leave the door closed for 3 minutes after (retains steam), then wipe the interior with a microfibre cloth. The loosened residue comes off with minimal scrubbing. This method works for even heavily soiled microwaves.
Stubborn Spots
For spots that don't release after steaming, a paste of baking soda and a small amount of water applied to the spot and left for 5 minutes, then scrubbed with a sponge, removes most baked-on residue. Avoid abrasive scrubbers on the microwave interior — they damage the coating.
Turntable
Remove the glass turntable plate and wash in warm soapy water in the sink, or run through the dishwasher. The turntable ring (the roller ring beneath it) should also be removed and washed — accumulated food debris on the ring causes uneven rotation and noise.
Exterior and Door
Wipe the exterior with a damp microfibre cloth and a small amount of all-purpose cleaner. The door handle and the door seal (the rubber gasket around the door frame) accumulate grease and food residue — these areas require specific attention with a cloth or soft toothbrush in the seal channel.
