Tipping Your House Cleaner in Ontario
Tipping practices for house cleaning in Ontario are less standardized than for restaurants or haircuts — many clients are uncertain whether to tip, when, how much, and whether it goes to the cleaner or the company. Here's a straightforward guide.
Is Tipping Expected?
Unlike restaurants where service charges are rarely included in the bill, most Ontario cleaning companies charge a complete rate for their service. Tipping is not expected or required — but it is appreciated, and when given appropriately it builds a positive relationship with the cleaning team who regularly enters your home.
When Tipping Makes Sense
- Outstanding performance on a difficult clean: A particularly thorough deep clean, a move-out clean where the team went above and beyond, or a cleaning under difficult circumstances (extreme condition home, very challenging access, extra-long clean)
- Holiday tipping: A one-time holiday tip (December) is a common way to thank a recurring cleaning team — typically the equivalent of one cleaning visit
- Long-term relationship: For recurring clients who've had the same cleaner for months or years, an annual or semi-annual tip acknowledges the relationship
How Much
For individual visit tips: $10–$20 per cleaner for a standard visit, $20–$40 for an exceptional clean or difficult job. For holiday tips with a regular team: the equivalent of one cleaning visit divided among the cleaners, or $40–$80 for a team of two.
Cash vs. Other Methods
Cash is always appreciated as a direct tip to the cleaner. If paying by card through a platform, verify whether tips through the platform reach the cleaning team — company policies vary.
